Hello from the other side...

Popping in after a million years to say Yay! Yay! Yay! for the fantastic "One Night in Miami" reviews and to bask in undue pride for my babies Regina King and Aldis Hodge. I'm doing a Leverage rewatch and grinning feverishly at all the praise heaped on Aldis in the commentary and talk about his talent and great future and knowing that it's coming true right now has me giddy. Watched Regina King as a little ole baby thing on 227, watched her work and grind over the years in good stuff and bad and be amazing every time, and finally, it's paying off. So, so happy for them, and for of course the entire cast and crew.

comments

I mean sure, my new fandom is 5 years old, but hey, at least it's in this decade. In my continuing effort to be fannishly engaged again, I decided to jump into the Season of Kink Holiday Fest a week and a half before it was over. So er...happy valentine's day hartwin fans I guess...but not the go crazy and murder you friends kind.

comments

Wynonna Earp

It's sad that I pretty much have to be depressed and looking for an escape to take a chance on watching stuff these days. That being said, Wynonna Earp was hella fun, at least the first season which is what Netflix has.

I love the way the characters own their damage and the way they don't pretend like vindication can wipe away the years of trauma. I also like that it's genuinely funny. I'd say it's the closest thing to a successor to Buffy that I've seen.

I'd definitely recommend it.

comments

So apparently Photobucket is going to remove all 3rd party hosting images unless I pay them $40 a month, which is not happening. Frankly I don't even have the spirit to go hunting for another image hosting site and repost something like 15 years of stuff, so once the images disappear, I'm just going to make those posts private.

I just wanted to offer a heads up to explain why some stuff is going to disappear.

comments

Entourage: the movie

so yeah, the Entourage nostalgia kick continues. I think I miss the tiny, awesome, drama free fandom more than anything. There's pretty much no way it would exist in that form today, which is not necessarily a bad thing -- I mean I'm not going to deny the show was problematic but it was fun and stress relieving to enjoy it as a hyper fantasy without too much analysis, much the way I used to enjoy my soaps and my Harlequins.

That being said, after having a massive reread of Entourage fic, it's clear the fic held up a lot better than the gang did.
Movie spoilers just in case anyone cares two years later:

The movie could have been decent but just to start, the credit sequence is 2 minutes long, wtf? And not, credits over the action, just credits and music and Doug Ellin jerking himself off for 2 mins.

The closed captioning is frankly, shitty. Fuzzy and grayish and very difficult to see.

The storyline is basically an episode of the show, but sadly, not even a very good episode of the show. The story is built to drag the characters back to where they were years ago, all success and forward momentum stalled or erased. Also, there don't feel like any real consequences here when 3 out of 4 of these guys can just pony up 8 million to complete the movie with no hassle; which begs the question, why not just do that and take a piece of the movie rather than begging Billy Bob to give them more money anyway?

Best cameo is probably Armie Hammer, who I feel like should have more of a career, and possibly would if he wasn't so nice looking. When he plays odd/unhinged like here and in Man from Uncle, he's terrific.

Best fannish moment is when Sloan goes into labor and Eric and Vince are both running along side of the stretcher. Looked like a scene from my fav Entourage series Here's Us Together

comments

That's it, I'm done.

I've been so out of it the last month I just found out that Sense8 was cancelled. So my heart is broken and I'm pretty much done with first run television at this point. There were very few things I still watched anyway, Sense8 and Archer and those were still binged but at this point I just refuse to invest my time and energy and emotion into a show that may get kicked to the curb at any time.

comments

There's a reason I call my journals Zooland

So in keeping with my profile information of having too many animals, I have 2 current, fairly urgent animal situations.

One, a stray mama cat showed up with three adorable kittens. 2 black, 1 gray tabby. They are all manx and I'd love to find a home for them. We'd keep them but we just took in 2 stray boys and will take in the mama cat as well. They are still pretty wary but we are working on socialization.

Two, and really more urgent. We need a temporary foster home for a sweet, energetic lab puppy about 4 months old. He has all his shots but has not been neutered as of yet. We are looking to move asap but it will be a few months at least. I am happy to take care of food and any vet needs and would like visitation. I unfortunately can't pay much but I can manage $100 a month as well. Anybody with a little extra space, and energy and needing a little extra money, please shoot me a line at the ceares at yahoo email. We are in Houston by the way, so anywhere in Houston or surrounds is fine.

comments

Insta rec-New Orleans mayor on confederate monuments

Amazing speech.

So before we part let us again state the truth clearly.

The Confederacy was on the wrong side of history and humanity. It sought to tear apart our nation and subjugate our fellow Americans to slavery. This is the history we should never forget and one that we should never again put on a pedestal to be revered.

http://pulsegulfcoast.com/2017/05/transcript-of-new-orleans-mayor-landrieus-address-on-confederate-monuments

comments

Smokin' Aces

is one of those weird films that I never think about until it comes on then I get momentarily obsessed with it. Fortunately, one of my obsessive times coincided with Yuletide and I wound up with some lovely fic gems. I'm rereading right now since the movie was on last night(tuesday)

So let me rec healingmirth's series Will you allow me that? and Ponderosa's longer, lovely The Way of the World

comments

#Oscars so befuddled

haven't watched the Oscars in years, but wow!

I immediately thought that #Oscar so white, like many Caucasian Americans was confused when it wasn't so white anymore.

My second thought was they hit the diversity trifeta with Moonlight. They could reward black, gay and Muslim all at once. I'd like to be excited or even hopeful but this isn't the first time they've taken a few steps forward only to tumble allllll the way back.

sniping aside, I feel bad for both groups but I'm sure Steve Harvey and Kanye West are glad to be bumped down the list of moment stealers

The upside is maybe that will kill forever the rumor that Marisa Tomei didn't win for My Cousin Vinny because for one it's a shitty story to spread and for two, fuck you, she was amazing in that.

One of my favorite comedic academy performances.

comments

Leverage theories, because why not.

1. I think there's enough canon evidence to say that Parker and Sophie are already millionaires at least when the show starts but I'd posit that Hardison is too, or pretty close to it. Given his investing acumen and his penchant for buy real estate, I can't see him not already laying a hearty nest egg aside for himself and Nana.

2. They are not dipping into their own money unless they have to and their alternate revenue stream is what they con from their marks. I don't think this was solidly established and we often see them give the victims a hefty amount of money but there is no way that I believe they don't grab a little something to finance their cons.

3. Nate was a fake citizen all along. It's always bothered me a bit that in The Long Goodbye Job he says the Leverage crew is all he ever had. Thinking about it though, I think because of Jimmy and his own nature he never really acce[t his other life with Maggie and his son. I think there was some part of him that always felt he was faking it and when he lost everything that sort of confirmed that he never really had them. With the Leverage crew it was the opposite.

Still not over this show. Never over this show.

comments

Random Things Post #2

Just saw the trailer for Collide and really? Again? Just fucking once I'd like to see the movie where the husband or kid of the female cop/agent/spy/formerthief/hacker is kidnapped to force her to do a job. The closest I can think of is Salt and 1 that was originally written for Tom Cruise and 2 she didn't get to storm to the rescue, instead having to settle for revenge instead of a happy ending.

I need an intervention to stop buying art supplies. Or I need to win the lottery, quit my job and spend my days(well nights) using up all I have.

I was reading an article about terrible singer vehicles and totally came away wanting to see Glitterc and On the Line.

I really, really hate job hunting

comments

Yuri on Ice -- finally

I knew I would love it. Ice skating and boys in love, what's not to adore? But, I didn't expect it to be so funny. It reminded me of Hikaru No Go, the thing I measure all anime/manga by since it was my first and also was amazing.

also unexpected?

cut for spoilers

comments

Sense8: Christma Special and general chatter

I really love the concept of this show, but even more, I love the fact that because of the way they film, the actors are having something of a similar experience as the characters.

Watch this if you're not. Watch if you like action, comedy, and drama all balanced in one show. Watch if you like multiculturalism, watch if you like LGBTQ characters, POC and women all featured in stories that embrace their life and culture rather than just supporting the main(usually white, male)characters story, watch if you like terrific ensembles, watch if you like smart, savvy, survivors, watch if you like the idea of interconnection, watch if you like pretty explicit sex that manages to be a beautiful example of that interconnection., watch if you like clever story telling. Hell watch if you like Naveen Andrews(what? people have watched things for worse reasons)

more thoughts but some minor spoilers if you haven't watched the show at all. nothing specific to the Xmas special

comments

In the few weeks before I have to have a million jobs again, I plan to kiss you and love you and squeeze you and call you George.

In other words, there may be a lot of posts or comments or maybe even some fic or art *shrugs* who knows? I may just fall into a coma and let everything I know about MLA formatting leak out of my ears into a puddle on the floor.

Meanwhile \O/ Yatta!

comments
